Internships/Practicum Opportunities

Choices is looking for organized, flexible, and self-motivated individuals who need to complete a practicum while obtaining their Masters degree in Counseling/Psychology or Marriage and Family Therapy, or individuals that are completing their MFT certificate.

We have accepted interns from the following institutions:

Adler Graduate School, Argosy University, Bethel Seminary, University of Wisconsin-Stout, St. Mary’s University, University of Minnesota

We start interns at different times throughout the year and typically have up to 6 interns at one time. Applicants should be in their second year of their program and should contact us as soon as possible in order to be considered for the next placement.

At Choices, you will experience the following during your practicum:

  • Opportunities to work with Children, Adolescents and their Families in the home, providing intensive level Individual and Family Skills
  • Opportunity to learn all of the required recordkeeping requirements that are necessary to be a successful therapist
  • This practicum experience at Choices will prepare you for a future as a therapist and give you valuable clinical experience

We accept individuals that can commit to a minimum of 20 hours per week and do not have full time employment. The internship hours vary (due to client schedules) and can be during the days and/or evenings. Weekly, interns are involved in staff meetings and supervision groups during the day.

Upon completion of a successful practicum, there may be an opportunity to join the Choices Team as an employee. We have hired many of our interns into full time employment and while working here, they have been able to receive their Board Certified supervision while obtaining valuable experience as an in-home practitioner working towards full licensure.

Here is what interns are saying about their practicum experience at Choices:

"As an intern with Choices Psychotherapy I have had the opportunity to work with a variety of clients and their families. I find this to be an incredible benefit in the fact that this has allowed me to deal with a very diverse population and see a great deal of complex issues, challenges and aspects of family life. One of the major benefits of interning with Choices has been the diverse population we work with. The opportunity to be in my client’s homes and see their everyday living situation and surroundings provides such rich material to work with. The interactions and relational settings are at your fingertips and in their purest form due to the comfort clients may feel being in their own home. Choices Psychotherapy has afforded me with an opportunity to grow both professionally and personally along with a place to begin my career."
- Katie, 2010 graduate of Argosy University and a Choices employee

"My experience as an intern at Choices Psychotherapy, Ltd. was an extremely positive one. As an in-home mental health practitioner I was able to get a wide variety of experience working with a diverse population. My clientele ranged from preteens to adolescents who struggled with a wide range of issues, such as impulsivity, aggression, and family conflict. Going into the practicum, I felt I had a whole head full of knowledge with little understanding of how to use it in an effective and productive manner. From my experience as an intern, however, I was able to build a foundation of what the mental health field looks like and what my role as a therapist is in the lives of my clients. Overall, I have truly enjoyed my internship and have gained a wealth of knowledge and experience that I am forever grateful for. What I have received as an intern is priceless and I feel fortunate that I chose Choices Psychotherapy for my practicum site."
- Lance, 2010 graduate of Bethel Seminary and a Choices employee
